Trivia:

The shower scene took 7 days to shoot with 70 different camera set ups, the scene was only 45 seconds long, a nude model stood in for Janet Leigh; the knife never touched her body; no one was admitted to the theatre after the film was started, Pinkerton guards enforced this rule; people fainted, walked out, wrote death threats to Janet Leigh, sent angry phone calls, preachers talked of banning the film; first time ever included in a movie – a flushing toilet; trade mark cameo appearances in all films.

The story is based on a book by Robert Bloch, inspired by Ed Gein who not only murdered two women and kept their heads in sacks in his house, but robbed over 40 graves and used the body parts to make furniture, nicknacks and a “female skin suit”.

The brilliance was that you were allowed to use your imagination, which is more powerful than explicit gore.

Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho is the title of a non-fiction book by Stephen Rebello.  Rebello interviewed every cast member for this extensive look at Hitchcock’s film and had access to archives and Hitchcock’s personal records.

Hitchcock’s Techniques

Hitchcock felt that the most important part of a film was the audience. He utilized techniques to engage, manipulate and surprise his audience.

1. Juxtapositioning shots to build suspense: the shot will be of the character, his expression, then what he is looking at

2. Controlling the Story

  • Hitchcock has the audience identify with the protagonist, but their point of view is not a clear, objective perspective, but skewed and not entirely trustworthy. This creates constant tension between what we see and what is actually occurring. The audience is kept in perpetual suspense.
  • With Dialogue –  during a conversation the Hitchcock will often show one of the characters preoccupied with something. Their eyes are distracted while the other person doesn’t notice, but his tells the audience something isn’t quite right. The audience is also drawn into a character’s secretive world. The focus of the scene then is not on what they are actually saying, but the sub-text – what they are not saying and the emotions attached to that.
  • Only tell the audience what they have to know – careful revealing of information to audience to build and maintain suspense. Keep the audience always thinking, hide from then some critical information so they think of the whys and hows.
  •  Controlling the pace of the movie: how fast information is revealed, what is happening on screen, the number of plot twists, the number of character introduced and how their stories intertwine.
  • Hitchcock used plot devices to create suspense: for example there would be a certain prop tied to the one “deed” that moves the action. In Psycho it is the envelope full of money. The shots include this envelope to remind the audience of the predicament that Marion Crane has gotten herself into and what is at stake.

3. Use Montage to create thrilling scenes: in the shower scene, the cuts are fast, calculated, from various angles

4. Emotional Impact – creating the atmosphere: Use surprise and twists to manipulate audience’s emotions: Psycho,  audience becomes attached to Marion Crane, then she is murdered; Norman Bates’s mother turns out to be Norman himself, with her body slowly rotting in her wheel chair.

  • use of sound: Hitchcock was the first to use the violin “screeching” in the famous shower scene. This sound has been used many times since and is an iconic sound in all slasher films.

Alfred Hitchcock, ” I don’t care about the subject matter, I don’t care about the acting, but I do care about the pieces of the film and the photography and the soundtrack and all of the technical ingredients that made the audience scream. I feel it’s tremendously satisfying for us to be able to use the cinematic art to achieve something of a mass emotion. And with Psycho we most definitely achieved this. It wasn’t a message that stirred the audiences, nor was it a great performance or their enjoyment of the novel. They were aroused by pure film.”

THE KID WITH THE DUBSTEP POWERS

(past)

Class has just ended and tim makes his way to his locker and
rushes home. On his way out of school he sees the girl he
likes and talks to her for a moment before heading out.

TIM: HEY CATHERINE

CATHERINE: HEY TIM WHAT ARE YOU DOING
THIS WEEKEND MAYBE WE COULD MEET UP

Tim seems to be anxious and
repeatedly looks back down the hall
to see if the John(a bully) that
wanted to bash his face in was
after him.

TIM: UHHG CATHERINE I HAVE TO GO I’LL
CALL YOU LATER! ( TIM RUNS OUT OF THE DOOR)

JOHN: THERE HE IS, GET HIM BOYS!

(John and his group of guys start
chasing Tim out of the school)

John and his guys push Catherine out of the way and she
follows the guys to see if Tim will be alright.

JOHN: THERE HE IS BOYS LETS CORNER HIM!

John and the guys catch up to him and corner Tim in the
school yard and start beating him up!

CATHERINE: COME ON TIM! DONT LET THEM DO
THAT TOO YOU!!

Tim pushes two of the boys off of him and catches his
breath. He slowly roles up his sleeves looking down at the
ground and calmly lifts his head while heavily breathing and
groaning. The two boys shocked and raged charge at him.

Tim charges back at the boys and with some magical force
throws the 2 bullies who now looked like fool down to the
ground.

A few other kids that were standing a 2 feet away with John
attack. Tim doges one and blasts the other and makes his way
to be one on one with John and looks at him in the eyes and
sais

CONTINUED: 2.

TIM: NEVER MESS WITH ME AGAIN JOHN

Tim gathers the rest of his energy left and blasts John, Tim
who has used up most of his energy runs away from the
incident and glipses at Catherine while passing by. Once far
enough Tim slows down and passes out.

SCENE 2 (REVEALING THE TRUTH)

(3 years later) (present)

Tim has been on the run for 3 years and he is now an
international wanted man, the same guy (John) has been
tracking him and hunting him for 3 years.

(fight scene)

Guys are lined up behind John in trentch coats and shades.

They all charge at him and a fight breaks out!

Tim in on his knees bleeding.

JOHN: FINALLY I CAN GET MY REVENGE ITS
BEEN TOO LONG TIMMOTHY
John steps closer and slaps
Timothy.

(ZOOM IN ON TIMS EYES SQUINTING)
(close up on Tims hands)

Tim: take this bastard

(raises hands but no powers are performed)

turn to John holding a rock John: I found your kryptonite
Timmy Boy. whadya gat now. ahaha, ahaha ah aha-BANG.

John falls to reveal Cathrine holding a baseball bat.

Cathrine: let’s go

(hugs)

they run into the sunset and End come over the screen,
momentarily after Johns friends enter the shot chasing after
them.

Light Sleeper

LIGHT SLEEPER OPENING SCENE

 

Bryson and Nate are eating cereal for breakfast at the dinning room table in Bryson and Nate’s house. On that table are two bowls of cereal and a radio. the radio is very quiet. its approximately  9:30 am. Nate looks to Bryson.

 

Nate: Yo, Turn that up.

 

Bryson goes to turn the radio up.

 

Radio: A Nerd with red pants and glasses been found dead at a local park near West 5th. The killer is still at large, police have no leads on the suspect. If you live in the area of West 5th and Mohawk you are encouraged to lock your doors immediately.

 

Nate: man i feel bad for that nerd.

 

 

Bryson: Dude, we live a block from Mohawk. aren’t you worried?

 

Nate: don’t even worry about it man, and remember i’m hanging out with mara tonight and I wont be home till’ late.

 

 

Bryson: alright man.

 

Nate gets up from the table and walks into the kitchen. Bryson is still eating breakfast at the table.

 

THAT NIGHT

 

It’s 11:30pm and Bryson is in his room, about to get into bed and go to sleep for the night. as he gets into his bed he pulls the covers over his body and prepares to go to sleep.

 

4 hours pass by and scary music is heard coming from the dining room. Bryson awakes from a deep sleep. he throws the covers off of him and begins to walk to his bedroom door. He opens the door nervously. he begins to walk slowy to the top of the stairs.

 

Bryson begins to walk down the stairs, as he approaches the bottom step he reaches for a bat leaned against the base of the railing. The music has gotten extremely louder. he walks  into the dining room where the music is being played from. he prepares for the worst as he turns on the light. as he turns it on he begins to grip the bat tightly. when the light comes on Bryson lets out a battle cry. Nate is on his laptop at the table listening to music. Nate screams in terror.

 

Bryson: dude what the hell?!

 

Nate: WHAT!? WHAT!? WHAT!?

 

 

Bryson: you scared the crap out of me man!

 

Nate: oh crap man, sorry! ill grab some headphones.

 

Bryson: thank you, god.

 

brytson leaves the room and places the bat against the railing where it was originally was. Nate grabs a pair of headphones from his pocket, and begins to put them in his ears and plug the jack into  his laptop.

 

THE NEXT NIGHT

 

It’s 2:33am and Bryson is sleeping in his bed. Pots and pans are heard banging from the kitchen. for the second night in a row. Bryson throws the covers of of himself. he gets out of bed and walks to his door. he opens it slowly and begins to walk down the hall and down the stairs.as he reaches the bottom of the stairs he reaches for the bat once more. he walks into the dining room turning on the light. No one is in the dining room. he begins to walk to the kitchen. as he reaches the kitchen he turns on the light, less nervous than last night. as he turns the light on Nate is seen rooting around in the cupboard. Nate looks at Bryson and says:

 

Nate: sorry man I open the cupboard and all the pots and pans fell out. sorry if i woke you.

 

bryson: for god sakes man just keep it down. this is the second night in a row.

 

 

Nate: I know sorry man, wont happen again i swear.

 

Bryson: you better hope so. if i have to come down tomorrow night, its going to be your ass.

 

Nate: ok man, chill.

 

Bryson leaves the kitchen and goes into the dining room and proceeds back upstairs to bed. Nate is still rooting around the in cupboard and is thinking out loud.

 

THE NEXT NIGHT

 

Bryson is laying in bed, and several loud thuds are heard coming from the dining room. Bryson, opens his eyes and has a angry look on his face. he gets out of bed adn quickly walks to his door, he opens it and proceeds to walk down stairs. as he looks for the bat, the bat isn’t against the railing where he had left it. Bryson begins walking into the dining room more nervous than before. as he walks into the dining room he turns on the light. Bryson sees Nate dragging in a dead body. Nate drops the body and looks at Bryson in shock. Bryson stares at Nate with a surprised look om his face.

he though was necessary to bring and stuffed it into his bag.
